A VPN kill switch cuts your internet connection the moment your VPN tunnel drops. Without one, there's a window — sometimes just milliseconds, sometimes several seconds — where your real IP address and unencrypted traffic are exposed. If you're using a VPN for privacy, torrenting, or bypassing censorship, that window can undo everything.

We tested the kill switch on 15 VPN services across Windows, macOS, and Android. We forced disconnections by killing the VPN process, switching Wi-Fi networks, waking from sleep, and rebooting the system. Here's what we found.

What a Kill Switch Actually Does

When your VPN connection drops unexpectedly — server crash, network switch, laptop waking from sleep — your device reverts to its normal internet connection. That means:

  • Your real IP address is visible to every site and service you connect to.
  • DNS requests go through your ISP, revealing which sites you visit.
  • Any active downloads or uploads continue unencrypted.

A kill switch prevents this by setting up firewall rules that block all traffic unless it flows through the VPN tunnel. The two main types:

System-level kill switch: Blocks all internet traffic on the entire device when the VPN drops. Nothing gets through — not browsers, not apps, not background processes. This is the most secure option.

App-level kill switch: Only terminates specific applications you select (e.g., your torrent client or browser) when the VPN drops. Other apps keep their normal internet connection. Less disruptive but also less secure.

How We Tested

We ran four tests on each VPN, repeated three times each on Windows 11 and macOS. All traffic was captured with Wireshark:

  1. Process kill — Force-closed the VPN process via Task Manager / Activity Monitor and checked for leaked packets.
  2. Network switch — Disconnected Wi-Fi and reconnected to a different network to simulate moving between hotspots.
  3. Sleep/wake — Closed the laptop lid for 60 seconds, reopened, and monitored for leaks during reconnection.
  4. System reboot — Restarted with the VPN set to auto-launch and checked for leaks before the tunnel established.

1. NordVPN — Most Flexible Kill Switch

NordVPN is the only major provider offering both a system-level and an app-level kill switch as separate, independently configurable features. The system-level "Internet Kill Switch" blocked all traffic instantly in every test — process kill, network switch, and sleep/wake. Zero leaked packets.

The app-level kill switch let us specify individual apps to terminate on disconnect. We set it to close qBittorrent and Firefox, and it worked correctly every time.

The one weakness: like nearly every VPN, NordVPN's kill switch does not protect during a full system reboot. There's a brief window between OS startup and the VPN client establishing a tunnel where traffic can leak. NordVPN acknowledges this and recommends enabling its auto-connect feature to minimize the gap.

ExpressVPN calls its kill switch "Network Lock." It's system-level only — no app-level option — but it was rock-solid in testing. Every forced disconnection immediately killed all traffic. Network switches and sleep/wake cycles were handled cleanly.

Network Lock is enabled by default on desktop apps, which matters. Many users never dig into settings, so having it on out of the box is a real advantage.

In our tests, it blocked traffic instantly on process kill and network switch. Sleep/wake had zero leaks. Proton also has a "Permanent Kill Switch" mode that survives VPN app crashes by installing persistent firewall rules at the OS level.

Surfshark does not offer a separate app-level kill switch, but its system-level implementation is solid. At $1.99/month, it's the cheapest VPN on this list with a kill switch that actually passed every test.

5. Mullvad — Most Paranoid Implementation

Mullvad takes the most aggressive approach. Its kill switch is always active and cannot be turned off. Even more notably, Mullvad installs system-level firewall rules that persist even if the Mullvad app crashes or is uninstalled. You have to manually remove these rules to restore normal internet without Mullvad.

This makes Mullvad the most leak-proof option we tested, including during reboots — the persistent firewall rules block traffic before any apps load. The tradeoff is usability: if something goes wrong with Mullvad, you may need to manually edit your firewall to get online.

VPNs That Failed Our Kill Switch Test

Not every VPN passed. Here's where we saw leaked packets:

  • Atlas VPN — Failed during network switches. We saw 3–5 seconds of unprotected traffic when moving between Wi-Fi networks.
  • Hotspot Shield — Worked on Windows but leaked on every forced disconnection on macOS.
  • Windscribe (free tier) — Kill switch only available on the paid plan. Free users have zero protection.
  • IPVanish — Had a 1–2 second delay on network switches where we captured leaked DNS requests.

How to Enable the Kill Switch on Your VPN

Most VPNs do not enable the kill switch by default. Here's where to find it:

NordVPN

Settings > Kill Switch > Toggle on "Internet Kill Switch" (system-level) and/or "App Kill Switch" (app-level). Add specific apps to the app-level list with the "Add Apps" button.

ExpressVPN

Settings > General > Toggle "Network Lock." It's on by default, but verify it hasn't been turned off.

Proton VPN

Settings > Connection > Kill Switch is always on. Enable "Permanent Kill Switch" for persistent firewall rules that survive app crashes.

Surfshark

Settings > VPN Settings > Kill Switch > Toggle on. Available on all platforms.

Mullvad

Always on. No toggle exists. If you install Mullvad, the kill switch is active.

The Reboot Problem

Research by RTINGS.com found that almost all VPN kill switches fail during a system reboot. The reason is straightforward: your operating system establishes internet connectivity before VPN apps launch. During that window, traffic flows unencrypted.

Only Mullvad and Proton VPN (with permanent kill switch enabled) solved this in our tests by using persistent OS-level firewall rules. For everyone else, set your VPN to auto-start and accept that there's a brief exposure window on reboot.

FAQ

What happens if I don't have a kill switch enabled?

If your VPN drops — server issue, network change, laptop sleep — your device immediately reverts to your normal internet connection. Your real IP is exposed and your traffic is unencrypted until the VPN reconnects.

Does a kill switch slow down my internet?

No. The kill switch is a set of firewall rules that sit dormant while the VPN is connected. They only activate when the tunnel drops. There is zero performance impact during normal use.

Should I use system-level or app-level?

System-level is safer. It blocks everything. App-level is useful if you only care about protecting specific apps (like a torrent client) and want the rest of your internet to keep working if the VPN drops.
